DISSOLUTION OF A RELATIONSHIP
Most couples who decide to live together entangle themselves financially
without the benefit of an agreement on how to handle a break up.
In the case of married couples, state laws cover all aspects of
their dissolution. However, for couples who do not marry or for
alternative lifestyle live-in relationships, the court is usually
not available. Therefore, non-married couples who decide to break
up after purchasing homes, acquiring debt and other assets often
have nowhere to turn.
Our office can provide mediation services to enable
such couples to reach fair agreements. This process can also be
used to secure visitation rights for a non-birth parent who otherwise
would not have access to a child by petitioning the court, due to
lack of standing.
